September is Hunger Action Month
September 5, 2014

September is national Hunger Action Month  to urge the public to help solve food insecurity.

The numbers are shocking; one in five kids in America (and one in six adults) struggles with hunger.

At Iron Gate, thousands of hungry Tulsans pour through our gate every month.  Last month (August, 2014) we served 26,233 meals through the soup kitchen and food pantry.  That includes handing out 1,839 Kids’ Packs of healthy, kid-friendly snacks.

We count the number of hungry people we feed, but they are more than numbers to us; they are people.

We asked some of the adults at our soup kitchen today to make a sign telling us about themselves. “What do you want people to know about you?” we asked. “What do you want to say to other Tulsans?”

Here are some of our guests with their messages to the world.

Cooking for a Cause: An Evening of Fabulous Food

It was billed as “an evening of fabulous food” and the patrons said it lived up to that promise.  Food was the highlight of Iron Gate’s Cooking for a Cause gala at Metro Appliances & More Oct. 9 with 11 working kitchens and 11 chefs preparing specialty dishes, each paired with a wine chosen to compliment it.  Judges chose four chefs for special recognition. Event Invitation

Back to School Kid's Pack Challenge

August is Iron Gate's Annual Back to School Kid's pack challenge. Individuals, groups, companies and organizations are encouraged to help fill the packs for our young guests.

Each kid's pack consists of a quart-sized pack of healthy, kid-friendly snacks for every hungry or homeless child who comes to Iron Gate. This year, Iron Gate will give out about 12,000 Kids' Packs. A $5 donation provides individual pack. The goal of the kids pack challenge is to raise at least $5,000 to cover the expense of 1,000 kid’s packs for the first month of school in Tulsa.

Meet Iron Gate's New Security Guard

Meet Iron Gate's New Security Guard

When Clifton Manuell of Owl Nite Security was told that his new assignment was at Iron Gate working with the poor and homeless, he shouted, “YES! Thank you.”

That’s because Clifton, 32, was homeless himself for five years when he was a young man in Texas.  After a family upheaval left him without shelter, he slept in cars and on friends’ couches,  scavenged food from dumpsters and searched unsuccessfully for jobs.

“The hardest part about being homeless,” he said, “is that people think you’re worthless. Homeless people are not worthless. They already feel worthless; they don’t have to be bombarded by that.”

That experience gave him a special empathy for people in need. Read more to learn about Clifton's story

Kids Helping Kids
June 4, 2014

Looking for a summer project for the kids? Sign up for Kids Helping Kids. You can sign up for a tour, Kids' Pack drive, or service project.

Kids Helping Kids is a way that a school, family, or organization can help the hungry and homeless kids of Iron Gate, Tulsa’s downtown soup kitchen and food pantry. The goals of the program are education, compassion, and service. We want the youth of Tulsa to have an increased awareness about the issues within their community, especially child hunger.

We talked to him about the transformation.

"What made the change?" we asked.

"You," he answered.  "Knowing that someone out there cares about me."

Iron Gate Grocery Pantry

Iron Gate Grocery Pantry

It’s like the joke about the rooster doing the crowing, while the hen quietly lays the eggs.

Our daily soup kitchen gets all the flash and glory, while our thrice-weekly grocery pantry quietly chugs along feeding thousands of families and children.

Feeding kids is a priority at Iron Gate because we know in Oklahoma, one in four goes to bed hungry. That’s why our grocery pantry is so important. Parents can get emergency groceries to cook meals at home.
