Iron Gate Tulsa - News & Events

We are not the forest, we are the tree.
August 31, 2015

You cannot understand a forest by examining one tree.

          And yet.

One tree can direct our attention to the forest.

When Iron Gate—and Trinity—realized we have outgrown our space in the church basement, the Iron Gate board voted to find another location.

First, we did a demographic study of  (a) where our guests of the soup kitchen and grocery pantry live and (b) how they get to us for food assistance.  Then we embarked on an 18-month search for just the right place to either renovate or build on.  It wasn’t as easy as you might think.  Our architects consulted with us through the whole process to determine we need at least 14,000 square feet for the facility and 39,000 square feet for parking (staff, volunteers and guests.)

We looked at 27 different sites and buildings.  At last we found an isolated triangular shaped property at Third and Peoria in the city’s  industrial Pearl District. The ramshackle old lumber store on the property was beyond repair, but the site met other requirements: the right location, near a bus stop, easily accessible by walking, bicycle or car.

Before we could demolish the existing structure and begin building the facility designed especially for soup kitchen/grocery, we had to appeal to the Board of Adjustments for certain zoning changes that will allow us to use the property in the most efficient manner.

          Then the sky fell.

What's in the News and What it Means to Us
June 26, 2015
From the Executive Director: What's in the News and What it Means to Us at Iron Gate

More than 5 million young people ages 18-24 are neither in school nor working.  Oklahoma ranks number 13 in our number of homeless students, more than 23,000.  That means

  • We are likely to see another flood of homeless “street kids” this summer in Tulsa, and
  • This cohort is likely to become the next generation of homeless if they don’t get help.
